Trauma is the largest public health issue in this country

Here is the price we pay for not incorporating knowledge about trauma:

  • According to the CDC about 1 in 7 children are a victim of maltreatment.
  • Girls who witnessed domestic violence are 50 times more likely to end up in a domestic violence situation.
  • In 2016, 5.7 million Americans were a victim of a violent crime.
  • The United States has the highest incarceration rate.
  • In 2021, more than 106,000 people died from drug involved overdoses.
  • In 2021, the NIMH estimated that 57.8 million adults ages 18 and older in the United States live with a mental illness.
  • According to the AFSP, on average there are 132 suicides per day.

Why is trauma prevention important?

  • For every $1 given to preventative causes, tax payers save $7 that would otherwise go to drug abuse programs, incarceration, and public health insurance.
  • "The United States is one of the most violent, stressed, and traumatized countries in the world." -Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps The Score
  • Prevention helps people feel safe in their bodies lessening obesity, substance use, depression, and suicide.
